Coca-Cola launches new shrink film sleeve labels that are easier to recycle

by:HYF     2021-03-02
Soft drink giant Coca-Cola is testing a new type of plastic sleeve label that will be used in its products for Christmas. Coca-Cola said the sleeve label is easier to recycle. The shrink sleeve label that covers the entire bottle body can provide sufficient space for images and product information, and is becoming more and more popular with manufacturers. But for plastic recyclers, this material is difficult to handle because they cannot be sorted by the sorting device, which will cause a series of problems for the optical sorter, such as the inability to float in the flotation box and the inability to separate by air and many more. But Coca-Cola has developed a new type of sleeve label. This label is made of polyolefin blends instead of modified PET, which can be separated from the PET sinking to the bottom and float in the flotation tank. At present, bottles with full sleeve labels account for nearly 5% of plastic outer packaging recycling, and this proportion will continue to rise in the future. The full sleeve label can mistake the optical sorting equipment for colored resin, and it is also easy to mix with the clean PET chips that sink into the bottom of the sorting box. When recyclers use air separation technology for elutriation, they are also mixed with lightweight mineral water bottles because of similar characteristics. Under real environmental conditions, Coca-Cola puts this polyolefin label on thousands of plastic bottles for testing, and sends these bottles to different PET recycling plants for recycling testing. Satisfactory test results prompted Coca-Cola to decide to use this new sleeve label in its disposable round plastic bottles specially designed for the Christmas holiday.
